Better Router than WRT54GL?

Alright. So I'm getting tired of Linksys' Playskool-esque My First Router. Specifically, I have the WRT54GL running DD-WRT. The wireless on it is flaky, and it can't seem to handle bittorrent without slowing other traffic to a crawl. Yes, I have set a cap on TCP connections and limited my upload bandwidth to 10% of my download speed.

So this brings me to my question.

What would you suggest I replace this piece of junk with? Would a Spare PC, extra Ethernet card, and an 802.11 card work well enough?

I occasionally tunnel into my router from unsecured WiFi to protect my privacy, and I'd like to keep this functionality. I don't have a budget in mind, but please keep it reasonable.

if you use comcast (or the like) they do control bandwidth. it may not be your router
