Becoming an ISP
 

Hello everyone,
Im wanting to become and ISP by taking my cable modem and reselling my bandwidth to my neighbors using wireless technology.

WHat id like is your oppinions and ideas on how to go about this .
Helping understand everything i need and if you know of any good websites that give a how to guide.

Any Help would be appreciated.

I don't think you would be an ISP in this case.
Sounds like you just want to become a Hot Spot.
You just need a WAP, some wireless NIC's, and a good antenna system.

I serve up wireless access to my DSL to 2 houses close by. Now if I could just get them to pay!

Seeing as I work for a cable provider
we frown highly on people reselling OUR bandwidth
if you want to resell service (hot spot access)
you should look into a T-1
I would bet in your TOS with your cable provider that reselling is prohibited.

"We are reselling our bandwith" The bandwidth that they are using is paied for. Nothing seems wrong to me. I am sure that it does say in your TOC that this is not suposed to be allowed but who listens?

This will kill your DSL line speed if you have internet hungery people.

Note: I reccomend you use a proxy server to grant access to all http request. At lease this way your ISP only sees one IP address accessing the internet. I use squid cache...works great but you need to watch the logs and clear out the cache often as it can get quite big if you let it.

I also reccomend that you keep this network seperate from your internal network. You could use a linux box running smoothwall as a router between the networks.
