Arrow Basic internet help (lets just start with being able to browse net...)

At work we recently threw together a low end system to have as a local linux text box. We got RH4 installed and running. The problem is that we cannot get out on the internet. I followed the instructions at

http(colon, slash, slash)kbase(dot)redhat(dot)com(slash)faq(slash)FAQ_40_605(dot)shtm

and have the UP BROADCAST as it suggests. When I ping

www(dot)redhat(dot)com

it says unknown host. I am able to ping my router (192.168.0.1) and when I tried to set up my ip with a static address already held by another computer on the local net, I did get an address conflict error. I have tried the ifdown eth0 and ifup eth0 and it claims to be successful.

Can anyone offer advice or direction to another thread with instructions? I have searched all around here and found nothing similar to this problem. Thanks in advance.

(sorry for making the links so ugly. apparently I cannot post a url until I have made three posts on here.)

Try ping -c 3 66.102.7.104 and see if that works. If it works, then it's a DNS setting, and you usually have to add the IP of a nameserver to /etc/resolv.conf.

It did work. I tried looking into the resolv.conf file and it listed three IP adds. They appeared to be the same as the ones that were in the network config screen under the DNS tab. I was told by my partner in crime that the info on that window was auto-populated.

hostname: localhost.localdomain
primary dns: 192.168.0.11
secondary dns: 192.168.0.12
tertiary dns: 192.168.0.13
dns search path: xxxxx(dot)com

The dns search path does match that of our domain. Thanks for your speedy reply!

Does it match the nameservers on the other machines on your network? If they're linux boxes you can look in their resolv.conf file. If they are windows machines, go to the command prompt and type ipconfig /all. There should be a list of IP address next to DNS servers. I would put those same DNS servers into your network config screen (or resolv.conf file, whichever you're more comfortable editing). You might have to restart the network services, but I'm not sure how to do that in RH. Something like /etc/init.d/networking restart or maybe you can just do ifdown and ifup like you did before...

So Ip's 192.168.0.11-13 are your correct DNS servers, right?

run this from the command line

dig -t ns yahoo.com

If your DNS is working, it'll show yahoo's nameservers and which of your nameservers responded.

like this-

;; ANSWER SECTION
yahoo.com 148626 IN NS ns3.yahoo.com

;; Query time: 33 msec
;; SERVER: 192.168.0.1#53(192.168.0.1) <--your nameserver should be here
;; WHEN: Tue May 30 13:09:02 2006
;; MSG SIZE rcvd:197

valdez: the entries under DNS Servers comes up identical to the contents of of the .conf file. I couldn't get your command line /etc/init.d/networking restart to work, probably due to my novice level. I tried the ifdown/up again and it said it was successful again.

techy: my name server was indeed there.

what is my next step?
