hi,
I am new to networks.I installed fedora core 4 on two systems and i decided to connect them.since there only two systems available, i give them a class c ip address.192.168.1.1 &192.168.1.2
After that i tried to ping with the loopback device(127.0.0.1) and i got the result.when it tried ping with the other machine it gives me some message like no route defined. Then i give both the systems the subnet mask value as 255.255.255.0
Now , when i try to ping it says destination host not reachable.
What i am missing?
Thanks for any response.
Regards ,
Tom.

Are these system directly connected together or do they run through a hub or switch?
If directly connected are you using a crossover ethernet cable?
For troubleshooting disable the firewalls.
Pinging 127.0.0.1 does not verify hardware.

BTW Using a more descriptive thread title will help you get better responses.

hi,
i didn't use any hub or switch and it's a cross over connection
1)how to disable iptables?
2)Will it be the reason to give me the reason 'Destination host not reachable'?
Wont it give 'permission denied' message for firewall interference?
3)plz say me whether by default the iptables will block or accept connection request as i didn't add any rules to it.
Any how , i will flush out its rules and try again
regard,
Tom.

To stop iptables use the console command:
service iptables stop

I do not know what the default iptables rules that Fedora sets up. What is the output of the command /sbin/ifconfig
