Bandwidth testers online don't always give the best results. Theres a chance that theres a service on linux that could interefere.

Don't beleive in that number.
Try to make a test yourself.
Download something and compare the result in linux and window

in fact i tested it again tonight...on the same server dedicated for test download.
i downloaded a big file under windows xp and reached 850 Ko/s.
just after, i rebooted under linux mandriva 2005 and reached 130 Ko/s !!!!
i don't think it comes from the provider as it is connected through an ethernet router with adsl.
please help...
i tried to change the driver and installed the nforce2 driver from the nvidia website but it doesn't change anything.

If your ethernet card as a driver for linux download & install that..
It is quite possible that you are using emulated drivers which directly do not take advantage
of the Ethernet card features but instead add a layer of abstraction in between them making it slower.
-Also check if you have iptables running on the linux box making it a bit slower ..
& disable any uneeded services..!

i started and stopped shorewall and noticed that i had ip forwarding enabled in both cases.
maybe it's the reason?
how to disable it?
in fact i don't know what is "ip forwarding" but i'm looking for an explanation of my bandwith problem
thanks

hi
i tried :
- disabling shorewall ; doesnt solve the problem
- change the ethernet driver (open source "forcedeth", nvidia one "nvnet") : doesnt' solve
-disabling ip forwarding : doesn't solve
-tried under live cd knoppix : doesn't solve
-change the ethernet cable, ethernet port on the router : doesn't solve
-passed on 10 Mbit/s with the mii-tool : doesn't solve
i also removed any services that i could
don't know what to do now...
