BANDWIDTH: How to measure in system

Afternoon Everyone,

I am working on a project that will use satellite transmit ion of data to a remote site using replication software (yet to be chosen) with an Oracle database. In our meeting discussions it was mentioned that the bandwidth available to move the information is only 56k and also not all of that is dedicated to my project either. I don’t believe that it will be a large amount of information moving continuously because it keeps track of maintenance and supply not like an OLTP situation.

In my test setup, 3 servers networked together in a lab, I would like to see how much bandwidth is being used. I would like to compare that usage to what is available mentioned above for metrics collection purposes and notify the powers to be that what they have may or may not be sufficient.
I am an oracle dba and not familiar with all the commands on a Linux system. Is there a command(s) that would provide me with this information?

Your help would be greatly appreciated on this matter.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Regards,

Al

install iftop on one or more of the machines and start up a session with it monitoring the network interface then press "p" to turn on display of port numbers and then press "l" to enter a screen filter, enter the port number that your software makes a connection on and press enter. Now start up your connections or process monitor it with iftop it will show you in near real time the data throughput in a 2 second, 10 second, and 15 second average. This will give you an excellent measure of the bandwidth your application is consuming when transferring data. Press "q" to quit iftop.

Bandwith

Morning Sheldel

Thanks for the advice. This will be a great help in determining the actual bandwith that will be needed to reach out to the remote end point. At first I thought it was a separate software package but now after research I see it is part of the Linux command system.

You can be sure I will be using this to convince the govies the amount of bandwith they need.

Regards,

al
