bandwidth

How much bandwidth do you use at home/work when connected to a 100 mb switch?

If the speed limit is 55 MPH how far have you driven?

I think you want to know if you can transfer file at 100MB/s and the answer is no. That limit is purely theory. you will generally get at best half of the speed, usually around 30%.

The maximum throughput of a 100mbit/s switch is 12.5 mb/s.

This can be seen from the fact that the 100mbit/s is actually 100 mega BITS per second. So this allows us to calculate the maximum throughput of this common networking speed:

100/8(for the amount of bits in a byte) and we get.... tada! 12.5 mega BYTES per second.

But the actual max is slightly lower, probably about 10, due to network overhead, EM interference, and lost packets.
