Backup through SSH without password not working

Hi all,

I've followed this tutorial to backup my files to another Linux machine using SSH.

On both machines I've created a username (same user with same password).
On my machine I've made an RSA key and copied the public one to the other computer. On different sites I've read different things about the filename to which I should copy the key. I've tried ~/.ssh/authorized_keys and ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2.

Everything seems to go well, except for the part that the remote machine still asks for my password.

Are there any (ssh-)configurationfiles I need to adjust to allow SuSE 9.1 to use SSH without a password?

Does anyone know the exact filename for the key on the remote machine?

Perhaps anyone has an idea what's causing my problem?

Cheers,

Maarten

chmod 0600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2

sometimes ssh needs ~/.ssh and your home directory not to have group write access, just check.

look in the /var/log/messages file for any errors.

niknah,

Thank you very much for your reply. With a chmod (0)600 I'm not able to write authorized_keys2. I've CHModded it to 700 and everything works fine now! Probably the read/write for group and world were the problem.

Thanks again!
