Backup Mail/Webserver
Hi
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but let me try:
Currently I have one server handling e-mail (procmail, postfix, uw-imap) and websites (apache). Last week this server failed and it didn't work for like one day - that's bad - so I came up with some ideas for immediate failover to a second server:
The DNS systems allows you to add priorities to MX records, so if one mailserver isn't available the second one would be contacted. But now in my situation it wouldn't make a lot of sense if the mails would be kept in a queue on the second server and that one would forward all the mails to the primary one when it is up again. It would be cool to have a complete replicate of the imap mail system which automatically handels the mails in case of a failure - but the problem then is synchronisation - Does anybody have any ideas, or better, some experience with this kind of topic?
I'm also wondering how I can add a second IP to A DNS entries (also to handle failovers) - zoneedit.com for example allows me to add a second IP, but then handels it as round robin what doesn't seem to be what I am looking for (because when somebody connects to one server to change something in his web dir I'll always have to sync that conent and I'd have some delay).
I'd be glad to hear any ideas!
