Automounting smbfs

I am trying to set up automounter (on Debian 2.6.11) to automatically mount a Windows drive. I have the following entry in my /etc/fstab:

//duo-xp/c /duo-xp smbfs credentials=/etc/samba/smbpasswd 0 0

This entry successfully mounts the desired Windows drive manually using

mount /duo-xp

(although it asks for a password that apparently can be anything). I converted this entry into a map that I put in auto.misc:

duo-xp -fstype=smbfs,credentials=/etc/samba/smbpasswd ://duo-xp/c

I expect with this entry to be able to type

ls /misc/duo-xp/c

and get a listing of the contents of the c drive without first mounting the partition manually. Instead I get

/misc/duo-xp/c: No such file or directory

My solution is similar to others I have found on the web, so I don't understand why it is not working. I have another entry in my auto.misc for automatically mounting a usbkey which works fine. I also tried

duo-xp -fstype=smbfs,login=myname,passwd=mypassword ://duo-xp/c

in my auto.misc. I don't get any messages in /var/log/messages when I try to list the directory. Any ideas?

Have a look at man smbmount for the correct format of a credentials file..

Although the mount command reported an automount entry for /misc (automount(pidXXXX) on /misc type autofs ...), in fact there was no process with pid XXXX. In other words, automounter was not running. Once I got it running, the automount worked.
