"automount: test mount forbidden or incorrect kernel protocol version" in RHEL 5

I am trying to set up autofs in RHEL 5 and every time I run the "automount" command, I receive this message: "automount: test mount forbidden or incorrect kernel protocol version, kernel protocol version 5.00 or above required."

Does anyone know why this may be occurring?

One of the reason for this error can be, /tmp directory is not present or it's permission/ownership is wrong.
