Automatic detection of the sound card did not work
Hello All:
I just installed Fedora 3. Audio system is not working. The audio device was detected: nVidia, CK804 AC'97 module snd-intel8x0. When did soundcard detection, no sound at all. I did the following things, but still failed: (1) checked up the mixer, make sure they all are not muted and turned up (2) checked my ear phone (3) sound card driver is installed Your suggestions and help are highly appreciated |
do few steps, and tell me the results:
0. tell me your kernel version, wether you are using alsa or oss and the alsa version (if applicable) 1. reboot (make sure, NO sound drivers are loaded at boot time) 2. insmod every driver (one by one) into the kernel which you believe is necessary for the sound card. 3. post dmesg output here, and insmod output (if any) Maybe then, I can help you... raven |
Dear Raven:
Thanks for your replying. I (as a new linux user) just want to make sure these terms I understand right before following your suggestions : 0. Kernel version, you mean, -- > my Fedora core 3?? 1. How to make sure there is NO sound drivers at boot time? --> Uninstall these drivers first ?? 2. what does "insmod" mean, and how to insmod it into the kernel? --> Reinstall them ?? Thanks a lot |
Hello
ther kernel version can be printed to screen in a shell like this: "uname -r" to make sure how NOT to load drivers at startup, you may have to read some manuals how this is done in fedora. usually there is a file in /etc/modules.autolad.d/kernel-2.6 or something like that, that takes care of module loading at boot-time. but if you are unsure, it should be sufficient to post the dmesg output (its very long, dont post everything - just where your sound card stuff is mentioned) insmod is btw the tool used to load a kernel module into the kernel. it has noting to do with "installing". I suggest you the following: 0. post kernel version (output of command "uname -r") 1. post loaded mudules (after clean standard bootup) (output of command "lsmod") 2. post output of dmesg (command "dmesg") that should be enough... raven |
Dear Raven:
My fedora kernal version is 2.6.9-1.667. I am so sorry, raven, that I even did not know which line is related to audio stuff, so I posted all the output from dmesg. Thank you so much... ok, that's a beginning. how about the lsmod output?
g raven |
Dear Raven,
I got " bash: lsmod: command not found " for lsmod. Thanks mulan |
then do a "cat /proc/modules" instead
|
Raven, here is another long list output from the command cat /proc/modules.
