Authentication system

Hello forum,

I am looking to implement a system in my company, where users will have to authenticate themselves in order to have access to the internet. Based on which group the login belongs to, internet is filtered accordingly.
For example, if a clerk logs in, he/she will find more restricted internet access compared to what an administrator has for example.
I'm not constrained into using only a Linux system/software, but an open source system is preferred.

Thank you for your time

Chris

Another thing - Can my request be implemented without the use of a proxy? I don't fancy having to connect each browser on each computer in my company to the proxy to be able to filter content.
