arp ppp0

I would like to get my arp table from my ppp0 device since eth0 doesn't work at all, but for some reason ppp0 and eth0 display nothing as if my pc isn't keeping an arp table. If arp ppp0 is impossible, is there a way to change my interface to eth0

I'm on ADSL using Slackware 9.0, Onboard Broadcom lan.

hmm, arp -H ppp

bash-2.05b# arp -H ppp
arp: ppp: hardware type without ARP support.

Ok, so it doesn't work, now I need to know how to get around it.

vexer,

ARP entries expire, eth0 probably hasn't talked to any one recently. How many machines are on the eth0 netwok? Are you having any problems?

There is the 'proxyarp' option in /etc/ppp/options (or such). You might want to look into that. I think it's only useful when trying to "join" an ethernet (or such) network.

Anyways, why do you need this? ARP is really for "local" networks like ethernet. If ppp0 is connecting you to an ISP, you probably don't need it.

Hope that helps,
chris

vexer,
Just read your previous post. To clarify the ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) is for converting hardware addresses (Ethernet MAC addresses) to IP addresses. Basically the arp table will hold your "neighbors" address, not your own. PPP (more than likely) will not provide any arp tables entries, since it has none of it's own. Sounds like everything is working.

I haven't had my coffee yet, so post if this doesn't make sense.

Have fun,
chris
