I am trying to start the Apache server.... my RedHat 7 book says this is in /etc/init.d/httpd but I don't have that init.d directory on my RedHat 5.2 system.

Where does Apache start live under RedHat 5.2?

On Red Hat 5.2 the startup scripts are in /etc/rc.d/init.d.
