apache question
i have (what i would hope to be) a small problem with apache. i changed my DocumentRoot directory to /home/user/www/ so that i can more efficiently use virtual hosts. however, when attempting to access my new DR via the web ( http://my_ip/) i get a 403 Forbidden error. yet, when i type in the full url ( http://mp_ip/index.php) the file is executed as it should be. i've changed the permissions of the file and the directory to 755, but the problem still persists. any and all help is appreciated. :-)

in your config file.. you need to specify that index.php is a valid index type page..
it should be where you see index.htm and index.html.... as document start pages or whatever... that i think could be the problem.

i looked into that, but apparantly that wasn't the problem. my /var/www/html/ directory is browsable when i remove or rename the index.html file. however my /home/user/www/ folder is not browsable (both via browser). when an index.html file is placed in there, the server will display that page, however i use php and not html extensions. i *could* have my index.html file point to its php counterpart, but that seems tedious to me. plus i would like to have browsable directories.
i've checked, and both my /var/www/html/ and /home/user/www/ directories have the same permissions. any suggestions?

i am not talking about the actual file of our index.php.. i am talking about in http.conf, there is the configuration of what it looks for in looking for a default page.... you should add the extension .php as a valid start page or index type page.

yes, i know what you're talking about with the httpd.conf file. i just a few minutes ago enabled the DirectoryIndex of my virtual host, and now it defaults to index.php as well as index.html.
however, my original problem is not being able to browse directories still persists... any and all suggestions are, as always, appreciated.

You mentioned you changed the DocumentRoot, did you change the <Directory > directive?
If you look at httpd.conf, search for DocumentRoot, the section right below that should be the default directory permissions
<Directory />
...
</Directory>
Then following that, should be the permissions for your documentroot
<Directory "[DocumentRoot]">
...
</Directory>
Also, remember to update your path to your icon and cgi-bin aliases.. Those are under
<IfModule mod_alias.c>
hmm.. i just used some gt/lt symbols.. i wonder if they'll be interpreted as html for this forum.. heeheh...

/etc permissions
I had a similiar problem... my fix was to change the permissions on the /etc directory from 754 to 755...
It worked for me...
You might try changing the permissions on any other dir that you think could be the culput.

success! the problem was, in fact, that i did not have the following syntax in my virtualhost configuration:
<Directory /home/user/www/>
Options Indexes
</Directory>
though i'm still confused as to why my /var/www/html/ folder had indexing enabled, when the indexing option appeared nowhere in my httpd.conf file. odd. oh well... my problem is solved. thanx everyone for your help. :-)
