this is a last line in /var/log/messages file as I've tried to start apache :

Aug 25 07:42:25 server apachectl: httpd2 startup succeeded

it looks like it should be working but is not


what should I do next

This seems like one of the known apache bugs. See if you have this file: `/var/log/apache2/ssl_scache`, try backing it up first and then remove it. This should help...

Btw, it may be located in some other place.

Great thing it works!

The reason for that was a power failure or an unclean shutdown. Also, you might not have the rc.d scripts setup correctly, after running shutdown scripts the system thought apache processes would not responsed and termed it, that's why it never got a chance to remove that file.

You need to fix your rc.d scripts and, add lines that would force-remove the ssl cache file on shutdown if you have power failures or anything.

If you have questions on how to do that, ask, I think I'll find time to answer that.

Regarding mail server, why not? did you choose what you're going to install?

But if you start asking questions on mail server setup, please create another thread, so that other people can find it.

I don't know about what scripts you're talking about, honestly...

If you FreeBSD, I would suggest sendmail, if you use Linux, I'd suggest postfix.
