Apache and non-existing URL

Hi folks,

i've got the following problem with the apache 1.3.26:

on the server there is a index.html which is shown by the browser typing these url:
ok that's fine! when I thy a non-existing URL like this one
I get Error 404.

ok that's also fine but what happens when I try this non-existing url???
--> I got my index.html and not an Error 404.

What goes wrong???
