Anyone have any luck with the cassini module for the sun quad Gb Ethernet?

I get abysmally slow performance. If I shh into the server, browse a samba share everything works. If I try to transfer a file it seems to stutter/die.

For example if I copy a 500KB file sometimes it will just copy. Other times there seems to be a huge pause then it copies. Very small files like 20KB don't seem to be a problem. Larger files seem to cause something to timeout. (I gave up)

The link is set to 100Mbps, and the other old 3c509 in the system just behaves as you would expect. Same cable, same hub, I just switched the cable over to test the sun quad adapter.

I found this https://lists.debian.org/debian-spar.../msg00024.html

Which seems to be the same issue. (Link down messages)

so I have tried:
modprobe cassini linkdown_timeout=10

This seems to stop the messages but doesn't solve the slow speed?

I'm running Slackware 14.1 64bit, kernel 4.5.2

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

ssh is slow because it encrypts and decrypts - delays at both ends. Look for some turbo copy utility and use ftp. Experimentation will reveal what's fastest in your instance. For example
Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=some_file bs=1
will be slow
Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=some_file bs=1M
will probably be faster.

Thanks for your response, but the problem is not with ssh. The other NIC a 3com Etherlink (3c59x) works fine.

The point was that anything low bandwidth like a ssh shell works fine on the cassini. The problem seems to be anything that requires some sustained bandwidth, like file transfer (using any protocol), seems to crash the NIC/cassini driver. It seems like a buffer in the driver fills up, overflows, and then it resets.

It could be an error in the driver, perhaps the shift to 64bit? Or it could just be my Motherboard/NIC combo.

I have done some testing and realized that the problem is one way.

For example if i copy a ~40MB file TO the server it takes about 6 sec. (~6.6MB/s)
If i copy the same file FROM the server (tried multiple machines) it takes 20 Minutes! (~0.03MB/s)
