Anyone else think there ought to be a separate Samba forum?

Dunno if this should go in this forum, but it seems like the networking forum is constantly bombarded with the same questions about Samba over and over again. Seems to me that people would be better served to have Samba issues in their own place and REAL netowrking questions here.

Wouldn't generate enough traffic and already belongs in just the networking forum. If we made a Samba forum, there are just as many NFS questions as well from what I've seen, so it would need its own forum too.. but I don't think Samba needs its own forum as of yet.

That doesn't imply a seperate forum is needed, that implies people don't bother searching before posting. Very big difference

What they should do is have a sticky explaining, the basic things to look for when you are having problems,ie can you ping it, did you setup your users in Linux and smbpasswd, can you ping other machines from the samba server, etc.

Or we could put a fish's head on the front door of those that do not bother searching and post the same questions again, and again, and again, ad nauseum. We've had, if not the same certainly a very similar discussion here before now. I vote for making the seach facility very visible (i.e. in very large letters and brightly coloured on the sign-up form)... or stick to the tried and tested method of fish-heading!

acid_kewpie 09-12-2002 11:48 AM

no.. that would "add nausea" sounds similar, but it's not the same thing :)

why don't we get an 'inetd' forum? or an gcc forum (sarcasm voice)
that's what we need, more fragmentation on linux forums

KayJay sounds like my Windows hard drive... Anyways, I think we just need more thorough & up-to-date documentation on these popular programs. I still cann't get my Samba server to work right, dispite going all over this forum and google's linux search ...

R0N1N 10-01-2002 07:44 PM

hehe

Everything you wanted to know about samba, but were too Newb to ask.

hotrodowner 10-01-2002 08:52 PM

What do you mean?

R0N1N 10-03-2002 06:16 PM

"Title of samba forum"

...nevermind

u can't get samba working, while somebody else has problems with postfix. This doesnt mean that a popular daemon will get's his own forum.. when u start giving daemons their own forums.. u will give all other things it's own forum..and that doesnt make any sense. If people would read other smb topics more, and use the search button more frequently there wouldnt be as much samba questions out here.

So,
do you want the fastest replies,
or the to-and-fro?
1st rule is usually hit the books...
but it appears that isn't so reliable for nubes...
We've gone to the extent of having Our own kernel... (because someone chose to do it)
Why not make some nubes"addendums" for some manuals...
I'm sure most of the questions have been asked here already, and answered...
Wouldn't a forum also be a good place to collate them?

Regards,
Peter

I believe that there should be a FAQ pertaining to the most common questions. This would avoid useless posting. AND to make sure people see them, put the a BIG faq message:

"ATTENTION!!!! - If you have a question pertaining to any of the following areas....click here!

- Samba
- Changing Desktops
- " and so on and so-forth

This will help to keep moderators cooled off.....

In my humble opinion anyway....

Bigun,
A FAQ system is on the way, but it will not be live for a little while. In the meantime you can search for what you are looking for and either add to a thread or start a new one if you can not find the answer to your question.
