Any way to monitor network traffic without accessing /proc/net?

So I have a shellaccount on a server I'm keeping a Teamspeak server. I'd like to monitor how much bandwidth I'm using but the /proc/net folder is not readable by normal users. I do not have any root permissions in the server. Is there any way for me to monitor how much bandwidth my teamspeak server is using other than programs that read it from /proc/net (like vnstat and nload)?

You may not be able to access /proc/net but chances are that perl or python can! If either of these are available, you just have to do a little scripting.
There's always another way to do something!
