Hello !

Perhaps some of you have any ideas how to get a faster datatransfer between 2 PC´s

The situation:

one PC "A" is in my livingroom
the second PC is in my "hobbyroom" (PS: I don´t know the word in english :-))
they are connected through "POWERLINE"
because of that i can get Brutto 11 MBit/sec (half duplex only!)

when i copy a file within windows "A" to my linuxbox "B" or viceversa
i get a effective datarate from 3 to 5 MBit/sec!

My configuration now is done by SAMBA 3.xxx?

Is there a way to get faster access to my files?
I think of
... compressing the datatransfer
... do not use SAMBA but somthing else...


Any Ideas?????

Hi,
If both boxes are running Linux, then you could replace them with NFS. See the NFS HOWTO for details.

You could also run an FTP server one one of the boxes...

Also, you could BZIP up files before transferring them.

I do´n know if NFS is better what is your opinion?

ftp is definitly better, but i can´t mount it on my linuxbox !

the second PC should be a film/audio server (so my datarates are ok...)
but when i want to browse my jpg´s (with 2Meg/picture) it´s very slow...

2Meg = 16MBit -> 16/3(Mbit datarate) = minimum 5 sec to load one pic !!!


Any other suggestions?

Hi,
On average, NFS is pretty fast. There are some other network files systems, but I can't recall them...Andrew File System? Maybe not what you want...

Google "Network File Systems" +UNIX...

Upgrade to a 2.6 kernel. You will at least double your transfer speeds.

I userd Linux now for 1 1/2 years...
(first Mandrake and now Slackware current)

But i update my linuxbox always with "swaret" because i´ve never any problems with it...

I´m not sure if i can update to kernel 2.6 without any problems....
is it realy worth the work?

get a 802.11a/g, cat5, or fiber. I recommend fiber, if you want it VERY VERY FAST.
