Another person without internet.

I have a problem I've looked threw the search of the forums and couldn't find no answers to my problem. My slackware linux 9.1 does not let me connect to the internet at all. The modem is a Toshiba external Cable modem pcx2200 model.
I've tried the Usb and Ethernet cables but it does not seem to want to work. I have also tried to change the network setup. The Ip changes constantly for my connection and My computer's ram is 256 DDR ram with a Pentium 4 processor (1.99Ghz) and my Isp is Cox Internet services.

Any help at all would be taken very kindly towards, please help...
I really want to get away from Microsoft as much as I can.

try a different distro, theres nothong wrong with slack it's a great distro i'm starting to play around with it now and again to get the "REAL" linux experience but it's very hard to configure right, I've been using linux now for about 6-7 months and consider myself pretty descent. but I also have slack no where near ready to run solo yet. While my main distro (Fedora 1) is running 100%.... YA fedora running 100% I've really had no probs with it.

Alright, I'll take a look at something else like Gentoo.
thanks for helping.

Before you give up try one more thing....
The module may not be loaded for your ethernet card. I have a Linksys card and the module was not being loaded for mine. I seached the net and discovered it was the tulip module that was needed. Then I went to /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and uncommented the line to load the tulip module. Then reboot or execute the rc.modules files (just reboot). If that was the problem then all will be good.

what type of use text based or GUI? or would it not really matter at all before I try this?

benjithegreat98 12-24-2003 11:41 AM

text. (you can do it in gui but you need root priviledges)

at the command line as root: (note: you can type su to go to root when you are in regular user mode
cd /etc/rc.d
vi rc.modules
(or your favorite editor)

<this is where you uncomment the module>

write and save and reboot.

Do you know what brand of ethernet card you have? Would it have come w/ a cd that would give you a clue as to the linux driver type?

Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC

Ok. if you are in GUI get to a command prompt and type this in....

su
<your password>
cd /etc/rc.d
vi rc.modules (or use your favorite editor... joe for example)

now go to the line that says
# /sbin/modprobe 8139too
and remove the astrict. This will uncomment it. you may have to uncomment the line that is 2 below from that (it says 8139cp), but try that later.

now save and exit and reboot.

Hopefully that will work for you.

I'm In The Same Boat

Yep, I have the exact same problem / exact same Cable Modem (Toshiba) / and the same ISP (Cox-Communications). The only difference, is that I'm running Mandrake 9.2 instead of SlackWare. I've also tried SuSe 8.0 and Redhat 9.0 as well and encountered the same inability to log onto the internet via my cable modem.

It's just like you say, they give you a constantly changing address number, and it's as if Mandrake won't work unless the address is a static one.

So, you're not alone with this problem.

It works fine if you setup with eth0. For some reason that I don't know it won't work universial serial bus. so you just gotta watch what your doing during the install and it works great.:D

benjithegreat98 12-29-2003 08:06 AM

For USB to work you would have to have drivers for that cable modem and I doubt they are included with linux. Glad it's working for you.

alright, I got on the internet. I just don't know how to get the Apps to run for it. like Gaim and Irc..anysuggestions?

benjithegreat98 01-03-2004 05:59 PM

Need more info... Do they not work correctly? How. Do they load up and then close automatically? Do you hit the button and they don't open at all? Or do they seem to not connect to any network....
