An internet/routing/server question

I have a text-only standalone FTP server, and now that I introduced smoothwall to the network, I'm gonna need to configure it properly to get it to work right. To start off, here's my network configuration:

cable modem -> smoothwall -> router -> server and other PCs

And here's the question: when I open up a port in smoothwall, it asks what IP the packets should go to. Should I tell smoothwall to make them go to my router for it to deal with it (192.168.1.2) or my server (192.168.1.101)?

Are there any other things beyond this that I need to configure? I have the ports directed to 192.168.1.101 on my router too.

I set it to go to the router so it can deal with it and right away a user connected, so this looks like good news. If you would like to help see if the server works, please go to ftp://osrv.serveftp.com !

I can only connect to the server via it's private IP, not the url (for security reasons). So I can't really test the server very easily in-house.

How to connect to the Internet with RH?

Hello. We, our computer circle's member try to use Linux.

Although we could install Red Hat Linux 6.2, we cannot find the way how to connect to the Internet.

This is our PC's detail.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Red Hat Linux release 6.2
Kernel 2.2.14-5.0
The GNOME Panel 1.0.55

Mother Board (Network Card included): Elitegroup P6VEM3
Connection: LAN, ethernet

I have two questions;

1. How can I connect to the Internet?

2. Do I have to upgrade RH and the Kernel? Our PC is brand-new, however, a cheap and thin client.

Thank you for your cooperation.

you have to provide a bit more information.

Are you using DHCP to get IP addresses from a router ?
check what the IP address for this machines is ?

In a shell window type

You can check it in with ifconfig command
If there is no address assigned to it, may be driver didn't load .. etc. etc.

If it has an IP address .. check the following.

Can you ping to this computer ? Can you ping another computer

Can you ping localhost ?
