Red face Alcatel Speedtouch USB, pppoatm, Redhat 7.2

I am having trouble installing pppoatm-2 on RedHat 7.2 using its default kernel (and 2.4.16) and this is preventing my Speedtouch modem from working. Hotplugging works fine, even though the driver module doesn't load automatically, but it is the lack of pppoatm that is preventing me from getting online.

The patch always has 2 failed hunks:
linux/drivers/net/Config.in
linux/Documentation/Config.help
and since the Config.in doesn't go, I can't compile the module.

I am using BT Openworld in the UK which only supports PPP over ATM and as such the kernel needs patched. if anyone has had any experience installing this modem on 7.2 using the default or a newer kernel and using pppoatm I would love to hear from them.

Thanks,
Alim

ps- I've seen loads of people asking for this 7.2/Speedtouch matter to be resolved, but haven't found any responses yet.... I'm relying on all you people to prevent me from regressing to 7.1!!

They actually made a complete howto to explain how to get the driver working.

I have read the HOWTO that you suggested (Johan Verrept), along with Chris Jones' mini-HOWTO, the various READMEs and HOWTOs written by the pppoatm kernel patch authors many times over the last week or so already.

The problem is not obtaining drivers, patches or general instructions, the problem is patching a kernel newer than 2.4.7-10 (as included with RedHat 7.2) without experiencing the errors I outlined before.

Without pppoatm support the modem will not work, and none of the HOWTOs cover how to make the kernel patches work if something goes wrong - they simply tell the user to remedy the problem and try again. If someone knows a remedy to the failure I described, I'd love to hear it!

Thanks
Alim

ps- I don't want to switch from RedHat 7.2 - 7.1 was too troublesome and I like RedHat 7.2!

I had similar problems but installed Mandrake 8.1 and the installation handled the BTopenworld settings fine.
