I am more or less reconciled to the fact that wireless will not work with linux on my laptop although it works with Windows. However, I would still like to know why.

My latest effort was with the new test 4 version of pclinuxos. In harddrake and elsewhere my AirVast card is recognized. The recommended driver is prism2_usb. In /etc/modeprobe.conf, there is a line alias prism2_usb.

KDE control center says: Unable to autodetect wireless interface. wlassistant says: No usable wireless device found.

The only obvious guess is that my card is detected by some programs not others. I assume that there is nothing more that I can do, but I would appreciate comments.

Wlassistant also has trouble with
WLAN cards that need the Linux Wlan
tools [2]. This catagory includes most
USB sticks. Because these cards cannot
be controlled using the iwconfig com-
mands, the KDE tool will not see them.
On a brighter note, support for this
kind of card is on the program author’s
to-do list. ■

I have replaced the test 4 version of pclinuxos with the new final version. The newer version does not even see my AirVast card (the new Ubuntu version does). Has anybody found a way for ordinary users, not computer programmers, to use wireless with linux?
