Advanced Squid Configuration

Hi Linux Experts,

I am running the Ubuntu flavour as my Internet gateway server (that is, routing traffic for my LAN to the Internet). I have installed Squid on it and it has worked quite well.

However, I have noticed that squid does not cache large file downloads for my clients to use. Instead, each of them download their own update files, such us Windows update files. I would like my clients to use already downloaded files so that I can conserve bandwidth. How can I achieve this?

My Squid works in transparent mode.

Frank

You can adjust the file size in squid.conf. I have mine set at home for ... maximum_object_size 1024 MB

Look around that section, there are several tweaks there you can adjust

Hi Tim,

Thanks, I have made adjustments as you suggested, and now I'm monitoring the response. I will let you know. Thanks.

Tim,

I doubt whether Windows Updates are being cached for subsequent users, even after adjusting the maximum_object_size to 1024. My Squid runs in transparent mode. Anything else I need to check?

Regards,

Frank

It's been so long I don't remember all the tweaks I did. As for the Windows updates, I can't comment on a re-world situation, but I do know that I've built two idential machines and did Windows Updtaes on them one after the other and the second one spent very little time downloading which I gave credit to Squid for.
