ADSL USB Modem / Router connecting ( through USB ) but cannot connect to internet
 

Oh God ! Feels like home! This is my first post since, well, forever!

I have now access to an ADSL connection, the quality of service being extremely debatable, serves me no real purpose, but at least I can come here.

I bought an ethernet / USB modem / router, a Compex MRL21E, for around $50. Now, I didn't have an NIC 10/ 100 card, whatever that is, so I bought a Realtek 8139 and took out my Conexant (ugh) soft modem and put it there in it's place. It didn't work. I installed Windows ( even more ugh!) which refused to boot from a second logical partition, so I had to majorly renovate my system. The bloody card still didn't work, even though I installed drivers and everything under Windows. My FC4 had the 8139too driver already, but it's not really at fault if the card is not bieng detected at all. The IRQ of this card and my serial ports is 11, and I think that is the problem. But that's for another time.

So, I connected it by USB, and under Linux using system-config-network the connection, well, gets connected. I can see the network details in GKRellm too. But I am unable to connect using Firefox. Any ideas ?

I think that since I can connect, the hardware is bieng detected properly. SOme proxy server or something has to be used, perhaps.

Right now I am writing this under Windows, and I'm not happy. Apart from the legitimity of my copy, my philosophy and even my knowlegde of the workings of operating systems urge me not to use an MS system.

Linux & USB routers do not play well together, you should use ethernet all the way, basically, install a NIC, as you know *nix calls it eth0 (NIC)

using an ethernet connection will just make the net work, regardless of which OS you are using

hope this helpsno surprise there Conexant "Win - modems" will work on *nix, but, it's far far easier the use an ethernet router as i've already said
