ADSL problems continue ? need cisco guru...

Hello and a Happy New Year to all.
I'm still trying to get my Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem going in Linux. Having tried multiple OS's (RH MDK8.1 Smoothwall) I'm now back with my RH7 box and a new 2.4.16 kernel. The Alcatel drivers seem safest, as they don't take the whole machine down in a forking spiral to the powerswitch, but pppd won't connect. I get this in the log file...

Jan 2 14:46:39 jimsdesktop pppd[2398]: Connection terminated.

From searching the net (instead of working on my research project which HAS to be done in 2/52 time or severe career implications will ensue), I see that proto 0xfefe seems to be something to do with cisco catalyst routers, and ? token ring networking. My ISP is unhelpful, as you can imagine.
Anyone have any idea what I should do next???

Jim

Just tried sending feedback to Alcatel, feedback mail page doesn't work. Extremely unimpressed.
