ADSL problem

I got an annoying problem with my adsl-connection. It's a dhcp connection with a router that connects with eth.
When the connection drops for whatever reason the router reestablishes the connection with the provider but I still can't access the internet.
I have to ping any address first - doesn't make a difference which one.
After that it works ok.
Anbody knows of any tools I could get to find out what is going on there?

Sorry you got lost. The setup is as follows:
1. eth - my box
2. router - supplied by my adsl-guys

Now remember this is Brasil - the router is a greatspeed/something and supplied by the adsl-guys. From there it goes to the ISP but not without stopping over at the adsl-supplier first.
If you want to setup the whole thing all you can do is type in the address of the router and then you get a screen where you can type in your ISP and password. Basically a pretty nice setup for everybody involved - until you got a problem; then the adsl tells you its the ISP and the other way around. Plus why do use such a strange OS.
That's the reason I look for tools to find out what is not going where.
