adsl modems for Mandrake 8.2 and 9.1

HI,I`m getting new dsl service,SBC DSL Yahoo, and there is a modem that I have questions about and I don`t think those people at SBC will help me.

Will Alcatel Speedtouch Home (external) work on Mandrake 8.2 and 9.1? without any problems or need tog et any modules or anything ???:S

This modem would be best for me because it also works under WinXp (I checked Speedtouchdsl.com).This modem connects to a pc through USB and to PC/LAN through Ethernet. Please help me, Thank you.

According to Alcatel, like nearly all such devices, it is OS independent - http://www.speedtouchdsl.com/prodhome.htm
However, an idea - if you intend to use several PCs, get an integrated modem/router with 4 ports like this one - http://www.cazart.plus.com/conexant/ - you can then have a great little home network. This router is very cheap - UK £60 - and works very well.

Post d link dsl 504

im using the dlink dsl 504 with both mandrake and windows 2000
both configured to use dhcp, and they both work flawlessly.

also with the dlink 504 you could get two ip addresses and place one on the router, the other on the linux box and then make linux your router/firewall/mascurading host. (dependant on ISP)

this is the point im about to embark on.
dlink kindly sent me their tech builitin on how to configure the router for this...

the isp has set me up for this (www.eclipse.net.uk) static ip, two addresses, one for the router, one for the host.

now the fun part: iptables........

anyone done this with mandrake 9.1, who would like to share it, and save me some time, ie mascurading, and firewall rules.

i did it on slackware 3.1, on ipfwadm, via a ppp link.

pc's got 3 nics, internal, router, dmz mandrake 9.1

regards peter
