ADSL modems
Hello
my ISP is now offering an ADSL service, which obviously has attractions.
Sadly they say that the only modem they will allow you to use is the 3Com/US Robotics usb one. The website says it's "exclusively" designed for windoze, so I guess it's some kind of win-modem.
Looking at the winmodems are not modems site and similar, I see that USR aren't keen on releasing the necessary code to the open source types. It looks like my plan to run ADSL off my RH7 server box is dead and buried, maybe I'll have to get a connection box running windoze, and have a fw beyond that, but the idea of a win98 box being on 24/7 is laughable (they're trying to do it in my hospital at present, amazingly it doesn't work!).
Before I start looking for NT install discs or whatever, does anyone have any knowledge of this modem, or any suggestions as to a workaround???
Jim

Hi,
ADSL should be available from a number of different ISPs, you're not locked to your present ISP so why not try shopping arround?
Alternatively, if cable is in your area then you could get a cable modem. In England these are cheaper than ADSL, though of course you would have to change your telephone company and possibly even your telephone number.
Regards,
Richard.

Good points, but as I live in Hull, the wires are owned by Kingston Communications, not BT, and I'm unsure what the opt out possibilities are.
