Im trying to set up a mandrake 9.1 machine to serve as a firewall/gateway for my home network of xp machines.
My isp is telstra (au company) whom offer no support what so ever for linux, after running adsl-start and successfully connecting, which is not a problem, i cant do anything ... cant surf the web, cant ping any www addresses
result of adsl-connect:
adsl-status: Link is up and running on interface ppp0
ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
inet addr:203.51.12.40 P-t-P:172.31.17.24 Mask:255.255.255.255

I remember mandrake has in its control center something like a internet-wizard that let's you easily connect to the internet just try it and if it says to you that a connection can't be made just try to ping some server. sometimes mandrake suckz a bit in reference to the drake wizard
it installed shorewall, then i got disconnected from my ssh session. i dont know what that has done (its a firewall i know that much)... ive had to reconnect a monitor etc to the box to get access to it as i can ping the 192.168.1.1 but nothing else, no more ssh, apache, webmin nothing ... my lan has since been totally cut off.
Have i successfully picked the wrong distro for a n00b?
All i basically want the box to run is apache, samba so i can store some stuff, ssh, ftp, squid, mrtg and a firewall to offer me some sort of protection from the web (and hopefully get my Outgoing megs down from my bro's net useage so i can stay under this damn 3gig cap) ....
it's out of discussion that a mandrake linux is the right way for a linux newbie. but the things you require are not perfect for mandrake. there isn't a really wrong version for a specifical purpose only a not-as-right-as-another distri. i hate the mandrake control thing and it's little bugs (showing me i have no connection with eth0 while i already was online) and such things. a good friend of mine uses SuSE linux on his home server and it really does its job very well i think.
Or on the other hand if anyone has any basic steps i could take to configure shorewall to allow my internal network, 2 pcs on win xp 192.168.1.2 and .3 to share the network connection and get general access to the linux box id also be cheering.
want a tip? disable shorewall... it must be blocking everything by now... disconnect from your adsl ISP... are you sure the server demmanded in the adsl-setup wizard were provided ( the ip values or either the string "server" to tell it that your ISP will provide'em)? After that get connected to your ISP... try pinging something like google.com
did it work? fine... no? try pinging an ip address like 216.239.39.99 (it's google's ip) did it work? good!!! if not, hmmmm we have soe trouble ahead.
If pinging the ip worked take a look at your /etc/resolv.conf file... it should have the DNS servers inside it.... if it does not have'em that's the issue... give us some feedback about that.... if nothing of the above works we may start thinking about other issues....
Hi guys. This is my first post, so there you go. Another newbie in the neighborhood... I'm having his problem exactly, except I've done all those things you've talked about. Adsl-start says it connects just fine. There appear to be no problems when I run adsl-status or ifconfig. No error messages. But I can't ping anything beyond the modem (192.168.1.1). We actually have three XP machines and my Linux box hooked up to an 8-port switch, and the modem is hooked up to the switch, so we have a mini network going. We're all trying to use the same ADSL connection and I seem to be the only one with problems. I have another friend who hooked up their PowerBook (OS X) and it practically connected itself.
I disabled Shorewall as root by using the command shorewall stop. Shorewall status was still generating messages, but it appeared to have stopped. However, I still can't connect. Any ideas? I'm currently using RP-PPPoE and my provider is a PPPoE provider.
I fixed it. It was a Shorewall problem I think. I went into /etc/shorewall/interfaces and added "net ppp0 -", restarted the computer, did adsl-start, and bam, it connected. Still can't ping from the command line for some reason though... but http is working though, and that's a start! A great start!!! Thought you might want to know.
