Unhappy ADSL Configuration for Speedtouch USB in Mdk 8.1

Hi there guru types!

Please accept my lamer appologies for this post if it is not worthy of the forum it's in, but I am reaching despair rapidly...

I have spent the last day or two trying to get my Alcatel Speedtouch USB Modem to work with Linux Mandrake 8.1 ... MANY MANY How-Tos and FAQs later and I am still unaware as to what I am doing wrong and/or what to do now! I have not been successful in the slightest!

On installing LM 8.1 it told me to place the file mgmt.o in /usr/share/speedtouch which I did (via a floppy from my "Other", Internet Connected machine)...

What now? It doesn't give anything away after this...

I read on one post that you can operate the Alcatel Modem by using the speedtouch.sh command and I can do things with this... As root in a terminal, I can run the command but it never starts the Internet Connection.

I have also heard that in the documentation somewhere, there are 2 commands that would get me sorted... Bug***ed if I can find them!

On boot-up, I get flashing lights in the front of my modem and it synchs after about 15-30 seconds and the system carries on booting up having received the OK message to Internet Connection Initialisiation.

Please can somebody help me before I :smash: ?

PS. My eyes are stinging and I feel like sh1t but I am determined to crack this!

Thumbs up Success (of sorts)...

Right!

I have taken some advice from elsewhere on the forum(s).

I now have a solution that fulfils my requirememts better than Mandrake!

I went to http://www.smoothwall.org/ and downloaded their latest offering.

It's a scaled down linux, designed specifically for use as a firewall/router/proxy/NAT server and it works a treat! It takes over your first hard disk and is really suited to crappy old hardware...(the ideal retirement job for your knackered old PC)

It's ONLY 23MB and comes as an .ISO file which creates a bootable install CD (best £0.33p I have ever spent!).

I can now get on with running Mandrake Linux 8.1 on my main PC with a permanent and secure internet connection via my LAN, happy in the knowledge that the firewall PC is easy to configure using a web browser and I don't have to learn as I go along with my security at stake!

Spread the word!

I was impressed with the way SmoothWall handled the Alcatel Speedtouch ADSL USB Modem and Alcatels mgmt.o file download.

Anybody interested in going the same way as this, please feel free to ask me and I will give you all the help I can.

I will shortly be posting a short but concise How-To on my website.

PS. Do Not Be Alarmed by the first page, you have to surf with your eyes wide open!

Furrie,

What's happened to your excellent Smoothwall walkthrough? It seems to have disappeared from your website. :-(

Talking My silly mistake lol!

Oops!

I have just arranged for my domain name to be routed to my IP address at home...

So now when you go to

http://www.furrie.net/

you actually get to the Apache default page on my "New" MAndrake Linux 8.1 Web Server (athena.furrie.net), situated on my home LAN in my loft!...

I have neglected to learn how to put my content on the server! Silly me! (A little forward planning goes a long way...)

Any emails describing how to do this and/or how to connect to the box using "Exceed 6.2" would be most appreciated!

The link below will take you to the offending content if you so wish

http://www.furrie.f9.co.uk/

Did you really mean what you said about the page? I hope so ;-)

Cheers,
