Swap is a partition of its own. First install parted util to shrink your /home partition. Then use it to create a new partition with swap file type, then run the command swapon to activate. One question why do you need such large swap space? If you have lots of ram 512meg or more then swap for a standard system should be maybe 256meg. In the old days when ram was expensive, one settle for swap over ram due to cost, but did slow the system since hardrive transfer is much slower over real ram. In those days swap was twice the size of ram installed.
