Active and Passive FTP

Could somebody be so kind to define/explain to me the meaning of and difference between "active" and "passive" FTP?

I would also like to know the relationship of active/passive FTP to firewall rules, ports to remain open/closed, etc.

Many thanks in advance.

nice doc. I appreciate the quick reply.

If i understand correctly, you can more securely manage your firewall by specifying a range of ports that the FTP server will accept data connections on?

Does anyone know of the option within proftpd to configure this option? (If such a one exists?)

Check out the appendix to the above document, it tells you how to do it in ProFTPd.
