accessing MS-SQL from Linux

I would like to perform SQL queries on a Microsoft SQL server from a RedHat server. Does anyone know the best way to accomplish this?

You need to use the relevant drivers for whatever application framework you are using: (PHP, OpenOffice.org, etc.). Linux doesn't have a standard global set of (ODBC) drivers as Windows does.

I'm studying a Perl solution. I need to install some Perl modules (DBI, DBD:Sybase) and FreeTDS. It looks feasible but now I am reading that this will not work with MSSQL versions beyond SQL Server 2000.

I beleive that Open Source drivers for MS SQL have to be developed by reverse-engineering (by the FreeTDS project), so it wouldn't surprise me if this is problematic...

I haven't used newer versions than SQL Server 2000, so the only suggestion that I can give myself is that you could investigate whether the newer versions have some kind of backward-compatibility mode where they speak the same version of TDS as SQL Server 2000.
