Accessing internet through "Bluetooth phone" + GPRS

Hi,

Has anyone successfully accessed the internet from their laptop using a Bluetooth connection to the mobile phone and using the GPRS capability of the mobile phone for the internet connection. I'm NOT talking about dialing to the ISP through the phone.

For example, I want to use the t-zones GPRS service provided by Tmobile to access the internet from my laptop over a bluetooth connection to my phone. Has anyone got this working over a Sony Ericsson P910 phone?

I don't have any specific phone model in mind. I'm planning on buying a new phone and will choose the phone depending on what phones were able to support this.

Thanks,
Sarav

Dear Friend, do the following to get GPRS work on through Bluetooth...

1. Delete all the lines contained in /etc/wvdial.conf file and paste the following lines.

*************

[Modem0]
Modem = /dev/rfcomm0
Baud = 115200
SetVolume = 0
Dial Command = ATDT
Init1 = ATZ
Init3 = ATM0
FlowControl = None
[Dialer GPRS]
Username = user
Password = user
Phone = ATD*99***1# [ NOTE : - Here replace this number with your GPRS providers' No. ]
Stupid Mode = 1
Inherits = Modem0

******************

Then give the following commands in "Terminal"

1. hcitool scan

2. sdptool search DUN

3. rfcomm bind 0 <P-910Mac Address> <rfcomm Channel> [ NOTE : - rfcomm channel will be shown by 2nd command ]

4. wvdial GPRS

That'sIt

Remember the following..

Before you give the commands,

1. your Bluetooth Dongle should be inserted in USB and should be blinking.

2. Bluetooth must be started on P-910

Well, i wish you all the best.

Reply if you need anything else.

thanks and regards

Accessing internet using GPRS, bluetooth and K700i

Hi,

I have a similar problem. I use Airtel connection on Sony Ericsson K700i. My Distro is Mandriva 2006. My computer and phone can communicate with each just fine using a bluetooth dongle. I can even tranfer files between them. (In Windows as well as Linux.) But I can't connect to internet using GPRS over bluetooth in linux as I do in Windows XP.

I've followed bedi-beparwah's instructions with the phone number changed to *99# (since I use this number in Windows). But at the last step I get an error message. The output is as follows:

# wvdial gprs
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.54.0
--> Cannot open /dev/rfcomm0: Connection refused
--> Cannot open /dev/rfcomm0: Connection refused
--> Cannot open /dev/rfcomm0: Connection refused

I'd be grateful if anyone could help me with this.

hi, etechnophile,

My self if bedi.beparwah.............

Any way, come to the point......

Do exactly in the way it explained below, if no desired results...then post the reply again....

****************************************************************************************

1. Just plugin " Bluetooth Dongle into USB Port "

2. Turn your Cell Phone's Bluetooth on.

3. Open the file ' .etc.wvdial.conf ' in any Text Editor such as 'gedit' or 'kwrite' . and replace all the line with the following lines.

[Modem0]
Modem = /dev/rfcomm0
Baud = 57600
SetVolume = 0
Dial Command = ATDT
Init1 = ATZ
Init3 = ATM0
FlowControl = None
[Dialer GPRS]
Username = user
Password = user
Phone = ATD*99***3#
Stupid Mode = 1
Inherits = Modem0

4. now, open file /etc/ppp/options in text editor in the same way

and put # before all the lines starts with word lcp.

it should be 4 or 5 lines. Remember this

5. now , open terminal and run the following commands as the following order....

a.) [roo@localhost]#hcitool scan

This command will show the name of your cell phone and one Six pairs digit address. COPY THIS ADDRESS.

b.) [roo@localhost]# sdptool search DUN

This commmand will show you that on which RFCOMM Channel you dial up networking is available in your cell phone.

c.) rfcomm bind 0 <address of cell phone you copied above> <rfcomm channel of dial up networking which is shown by b.) command>

6. After binding, just run ' kppp ' and make a dial up connection as we do in the case of ordinary modem.

just choose Modem Port as /dev/rfcomm0

and enter the phone no. exactly the same you entered in the /etc/wvdial.conf file.

NOTE : MY INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER'S NO IS *99***1# and *99***3#. You replace this no with your ISP's on both places.

7. After creating a dial up connection in ' kppp ' just press connect button.

8. As you Press Connect Button, on your cell phone you will be asked to enter a particular digit which is for bonding between your computer system and cell phone.

Enter the same digits here which you have in ' Yast ' - > Hardware - > ' Bluetooth ' configuration. Check it

9. As you enter the digit , ' kppp ' pop up shows the following in exact order...................

a. ) Modem Ready

b.) Initializing Modem

c. ) Dialing *99***1#

d. ) Authenticalting....

e.) Authenticated & Registred.

*************************************************************************************

Regards.

I did everything the way you told me to do upto step 5. But I've never made a dial up connection in the case of ordinary modem, so I didn't know how to go on about it. So I created a dial up connection and specified only the modem and phone number, leaving everything else as it was. But when I try to connect, kppp gives an error saying "Unable to connect to modem.". Also, "Query modem" button in the kppp configuration window gives the same error.

Tell me if you need any other information. I'd really like to get this issue resolved.

Please follow once again exactly as written above by Be.Gurmeet.Be
Correct the baud rate to115200 instead of 57600
You need to use dial no *99**1*1#
Backup your options file and create a new options file in /etc/ppp/ folder and type the following in it, then save and connect.

/dev/rfcomm0
115200
noauth
noipdefualt
nodetach
local
usepeerdns
ipcp-accept-local
lcp-echo-failure 30
lcp-echo-interval 4
lock

Thats it.

Thanks, I got this issue resolved

I'm typing this in Linux; I can finally access internet from Linux! I followed instructions you gave me and also from http://www.geocities.com/tru2oxid/index.html

I'm still having a little bit of problem, i.e. if I disconnect from internet and try to reconnect it immediately, kppp gives an error saying "Unable to connect to modem". This issue gets resolved temporarily if I delete the name of my computer from the list of paired devices on my phone. But this means I have to put in the pin on my computer as well as the phone every time I want to connect the net. Is there a way to avoid this?

Again, thanks a lot. My primary reason for not working in Linux full-time was lack of internet access. Now that I don't have that excuse anymore, hopefully I can work for more time in it.

Thanks, both of you, Be.Gurmeet.Be and philipvarghese. You've made my day!
