I have a unix server that I need to access. I do not know the IP address of the server to rlogin or ssh etc. I have to access the server via a terminal, any suggestions on how to determine the IP? I was thinking along the lines of a crossover cable, or connecting the terminal and server to a switch... but then what? What do I need to do to determine the IP of the server so I can log in? Hope this makes sense, any ideas on what I could try would be appreciated. Thanks.
well that's the thing i can't get on... i guess by terminal i mean workstation, and i want to be able to log into the server from the workstation (unix) to retrieve some files. however i cannot because i have no information about the server, namely the IP address. thanks for the quick reply.
so let me get this straight, you can not phisicaly get on the server, access this server in any way? If that is the case than it would not be possible to get the ip. If you can access the workstation the os is on than ifconfig will work.
If you can log on physically, this web site will give you your external IP (in case you have to access it outside of the network) http://checkip.dyndns.org/.
