access linux samba server with machine name on network

Hello all,

i got a debian linux installed machine which runs a samba server on.

i configured the samba configuration file but i can not access my files with the machine name from other machines. (other machines are windows xp, my samba server runs on debian linux)

when i type the machine ip, i can access my server but when i type my machine name i got an error.

Do you have any idea about it?

Thanks,

Have you updated the 'hosts' file on all your systems? On linux it is located at /etc/hosts. On windoze, you can find it with the Find Files and Directory search. It is a simple text file, one line per system with the IP address followed by the name of the machine.

On linux, you need to su to root to edit the file.

Update thoes files, try it, and post your /etc/samba/smb.conf file if things still are not working.
