about setting a server

I get a old PC(Intel P2, 96MB, 20GB Hard-disk) with Red Hat Linux 9.0,

i would like to make it as a mail and web server so that the authorized people(about 100 people, each get about 10MB mailbox size) can register for a mail account.

I would like to ask if it's feasible to do it(as i also get another P3 866 PC, but installing winXP prof)...

but anyway, i want to try using Linux, can you give me some ideas to achieve this?

Thanks

Well, on a machine like that, I would not suggest Red Hat (I wouldn't suggest RH for any machine actually, but that is a topic for another time).

You need something that will run well on low resources. Debian or Slackware would be your best choice here. People are going to say that a Red Hat install can be made more efficient, and the bloat can be removed, and I won't deny that fact. However, on a mission-critical system like a mail server, it is a lot better to go by the book instead of spending hours just to setup a relatively experimental RH install.

Anyway, as I understand it, Qmail is a very efficient mail server package.

So I would suggest Debian or Slackware running Qmail.

hi MS3FGX and tszhim,

i have a redhat 8.0 qmail server. its a celeron 333 Mhz with 20 GB hdd and 256 MB ram. there are 75 email account on that server. by the way it has also an antivirus for qmail. it works slowly but without any problem.

actually MS3FGX is right about installing slackware and debian instead of Redhat. i did know only redhat when i installed qmail. so i installed qmail on redhat 8.0.

i advace u to install qmail by reading the guide at www.qmailrocks.org

i hope we could help u.
