8139 card doesn't grok 100basetx at software level?

Booted from the gentoo live CD, i'm trying to backup a 3GB disk to another computer, via the network.

The NIC card i'm using is an intel one, with a realtek 8193, running with the 8139too driver.

dmesg, as well the leds on the hub and the card say it's using 100basetx, but when I look at ifconfig, it says 10baset. Ifconfig seems to be right, because that's the speed i'm getting out of it =(.

When I do

ifconfig eth0 media 100basetx

i get back SIOCSIFMAP: Operation not permitted.

Anybody got a clue as to why it's insisting on working at 10?

I've tried changing hubs, cables, and so forth. Nothing helped.

What I haven't tried is mucking with the bios - i'm not too familiar with this, as i'm a mac guy, normally.

Ciao ciao, and thanks in advance!

Type modinfo 8139too. This will give you a list of parameters you can pass to the driver apon loading. One of them is media. Check it out.
