LinuxQuestions.org - 5 to 10 minute delay connecting to Internet

For the past three or four months using several versions of Linux; Mepis, PCLinuxOS, Kanotix, Slackware, Ubuntu, and others, I can not connect to the Internet in less than about five minutes, many times even longer than ten minutes. Eventually I get connected but there is this annoying delay. Later when I haven't used the Internet for a half hour or so I have the same problem connecting to the Internet again. It happens with all the browsers. Now for the kicker, when I use PC-BSD and other versions of FreeBSD the connection is made in seconds, normal time so far as I can tell. Also I have an old version of Mepis 3.3.1 that connects normally.

Now for the details. This started shortly after my apartment building changed ISP. The company provided a three port router and we need a minimum of eight connections. I bought an eight port D-Link router that is connected to the three port router. My landlady has her young "expert" who set up the connection. I am not in the loop except that I bought the router. I don't know what he did.

I have been a user of Linux for three years, a little experience now with FreeBSD, but almost no experience with connecting to the Internet. In the past I plugged the cable into my computer and it connected automatically. I have struggled for these past three months and lerned a hell of a lot but not enough to solve my problem.

In various forums I see no outcry of others with my problem. I assume the problem is the routers and how they are or are not configured. Can someone give me clue to how I can solve this? Before the problem started I had two DNS addresses. Now with DHCP it shows one DNS address the same as before and the second DNS address now is the same as the gateway address.
