4G USB dongle not working after drop-out

Hi there,

I have a working Telstra 4G USB dongle. Ubuntu picks it up easily.
Unfortunately it doesn't work 24/7 because of drop-outs every 6hrs to 2days (its the same with the booster antenna and I even tried a different dongle).
After the drop-out starts I can see that the dongle is still being listed as network device (in Ubuntu network devices and in ifconfig) and the status light is green indicating that there is a connection (or has been re-established). But once I try to invoke a webpage I run into a timeout. As well ifdown and ifup have no effect.
I have to physically unplug the dongle to get back Internet connection. And that is very annoying because the dongle is in a remote location. I loose up to 1 1/2hrs driving :-/

So I was wondering whether anyone of you had a similar issue and if so what you did about it.

Thanks,
Ralf

Instead of USB dongle some should use 3/4G router. This may mitigate the problem. My usb dongle has this problem also.

Or you can run script periodically to see if network link is up or down and then reboots the usb device accordingly.

Thanks Veera! So you mean to get a normal 4G router and connect it to my computer. A cron script will check Internet connectivity and restart the network interface when required?
Did a 4G router work for you? And which one do you use?

Thanks,
Ralf

what?

anyhow, i think the problem is not a hardware problem.

i sometimes have a similar problem with my internet, and i have to first stop my computer from connecting to the internet, then reboot the router, then reconnect. i think it's my isp doing this.

btw, the link you gave gives this:
