4 problems that I face with Linux (RH 8)

Hi,
1.

I am using RH 8.0 on a Dell Laptop. I have a Xircom card and a docking station which is 3COM. When I have installed Redhat with the docking station, 3COM (Docking station) is eth0 and Xircom card is taken as (eth1). When I run linux without a docking station, it takes xircom card as (eth0) and there is a module conflict.
This concept is a bit different than what we have in Windows 2000. It checks in which ethernet card, the cable is plugged in and then uses this. This is not so in Redhat 8.0. What is an alternative to use this? Do we have anything in this area?

2.
The other problem that I get is that at the time of booting, it does not recognize eth0 (xircom) (it says eth0 device not found) but i am able to browse thru the net. I heard that this is the problem with the xircom card. What do I need to do?

3.
I am using a VPN client extracted from (vpnclient-linux-3.7.Rel-k9.tar.gz) This works fine with the ethernet card(eth0), but does not work with the modem (ppp0). This should independent of the type of connection, I thought. Did I understand this wrong?

4. Don't we have a utility which is similar to Microsoft Explorer which can display folders and files. Natalus displays everything in a single window, hence it takes time to browse.

1. You may have the kudzu service running from boot. This is a hardware detector and will do rearrangements like you have described.
do ' chkconfig --level 2345 kudzu off ' to disable it after it has made everything work with the docking station connected.

2. See if 1. fixes this..

3. Quite often, when the modem boots, it will change your default gateway settings to the dialup isp's gateway. This will change the left/right & next hop settings and the NATing. You will need a second set of configs for a dynamic number. I've not seen this client but will have a look to see how.

4. I have a sidebar on the left of the window showing the folders. (KDE) There is one for Nautilus for sure...
