First off its a 509B not 8. Second it uses the 3c509 module, tryp modprobe 3c509.

I have been fighting that exact POS Nic card in RH8 for over a week. For some reason when it does recognize it, it makes the system unstable. If you can get a better Nic. If you are determined to get it working then set it manually and be careful having it start at boot.

It's an ISA card and those are getting quite dated these days, but it's not any worse than most ISA cards. It does have settings on the card for PnP mode and non PnP mode.

If the card is set to PnP mode then set up isapnp in linux and it should find it and load the 3c509 module. If it's not in PnP mode then you have to figure out what settings it is at and have the module load with the i/o address setting (modprobe 3c509 io=0x300) and probably additionally set the BIOS to not give it's IRQ to PnP devices (a BIOS setting like reserve IRQ or IRQ for legacy ISA.)

If that isn't working then you would probably be better off with a PCI NIC Any other ISA card will have the same or similar issues.
