Question 3c589d pcmcia dbian problems

Alright, heres the deal:

I have a Toshbia Satellite 1555cds, running a hard disk install of Knoppix 3.4

On boot (or even if I plug it in while the system is running), the system recognizes my 3Com 3c589d pcmcia card and attepts to set it up:

root@levydelta:~# cardmgr[416] : socket 0: 3Com 589 Ethernet
cardmgr[416] : executing: './network start eth0'
cardmgr[416] : +Sample private network setup
cardmgr[416] : +/sbin/ifconfig eth0 up
cardmgr[416] : +/sbin/pump -i eth0 > /dev/null
cardmgr[416] : Operation failed.
cardmgr[416] : start cmd exited with status 1

I have also gotten this same issue under Slackware 10

what is it I am missing in order to get this card working?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

btw:

lsmod shows the following modules loaded:
pcmcia_core
ds
3c589cs
yenta_socket

cardinfo also recognises the card as a 3Com 589
