2nd ethernet card driver install problem

hi, im sorry for this newbie question but i am trying to install a intel pro 100 M desktop adapter as a 2nd nic, into an old box running redhat 6.2, kernel
2.2.16.

lspci indicates machine detects the device, but am having problems building a workable driver for the card. i am not real experienced with kernels and compiling and am getting slightly lost.

i have download Intels recommended driver, Linux* 10/100 Adapter Base Driver [e100-2.1.15.tar.gz] and followed README steps about getting kernel-source for build. But as the box doesn't have kernel-source rpm installed on it, I have tried finding a kernel-source-2.2.16.i386.rpm to match my kernel, but it doesnt seem to exist.

not sure if other 2.2.16 kernel source options would work, such as 2.2.16-3
or 22.

i tried to make install it with kernel-source-2.2.16.lfs.i386.rpm but get kernel
mismatch errors.

and when do insmod e100, also get kernel mismatch errors.

can anyone let me know what i am doing wrong or point me to where i can find a 2.2.16 kernel source rpm, as i have searched high and low for it and haven't as yet found a match anywhere.

thanks.

you should most definately recompile (or rpm) a newer kernel. I recommend recompiling with the help of the Kernel howto from www.tldp.org. You can get the kernel source from www.kernel.org (2.4.25) is probably the best for you. Anyway, if you run into any specific problems when recompiling there are multiple forums here where you could ask questions. You will really benefit from reading the howto and recompiling :) Good luck mate.
