2 samba servers sharing common password file

Hi all, We are migrating from Samba V2.X to Samba 3.x

We currently have Redhat8 running on Server1. We have installed Fedora3 on Server2. We would like to migrate.... slowly.

I am using Server1 as logon server. I am creating Samba shares on Server2. We are all of the same Domain. I also am creating same user and password on Server2 and all is good.

The problem, or question is, how can I get Server2 to use Server1's password file instead of re-creating the users on Server2?
Is it as simple as PASSWORD_SERVER = Server1 on Server2 conf?

I could mess around and have a squizz, but this is my 1st question. Interested in the responses :-)

Thanks and Regards
Martin

When you say you are all of the same domain, do you mean a Windows type domain such as Active Directory, or are you talking about a machine name type domain such as yourcompany.com?

You can use NIS. Enable the server on server 1 and use authconfig on server2 to use that NIS server.

cowanrl and linuxxed. Many thanks for your replies.

In short, I have a Linux file/app Server and all the clients are Win based. There is an NT domain but it has a restricted use and the 2 Servers are dedicated for other purposes.

I've had a quick squizz at NIS and 1st impressions are impressive. I'll have a play today and let you know the results.

Spot you soon, Regards, Martin
