2 nics, no internet after new kernel compile

Hello,

After a kernel 2.6.13.4 compilation I havent got internet anymore. It is working in the current I am using, 2.4.29. I am using Slackware 10.1 as distro.

At first it wasnt working in 2.4.29. Because I have two ethernet cards in my computer I put this in my /etc/modules.conf

alias eth0 forcedeth
alias eth1 8139too

This was enough to bring my connection to the internet. But when I compiled this newer kernel the trouble began. After searching and asking for help fruitlessly, I decided to use the .config of the 2.4.29-kernel to compile the 2.6-kernel with. Nothing. Both the ethernetcard drivers are compiled as modules.

lsmod when using the 2.4-kernel:

Module Size Used by
forcedeth 9868 1
8139too 13928 0 (unused)

lsmod when using the 2.6 kernel

Module Size Used by
forcedeth 15464 -
8139too 22344 -

That the 8139too isnt being used, isnt a problem. I' ll use that later. But the forcedeth is needed for my internet.

I havent got a clue what is going on. " ifconfig" only shows the NIC's HWaddress, and " netconfig" doesnt help either. running /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 also doesnt work.

I hope you guys can point me out to what is wrong and thus i can fix my internet.

Thanks in advance.

If ifconfig shows the HW address, then the driver is loaded correctly. Is networking set up? What are your network settings?

Excuse me if it looks dumb, but where can I find any possible logs of that? I looked in /var/log
but there I cannot find anything. Nor any of interest in the output of "locate *dhcp*".

It should be in /var/log/messages. You can try a 'grep dhc *' in your /var/log/ directory in case its not there. Make sure dhclient is running: 'ps -ax | grep dhclient'

Neither does ps ax|grep dhclient gives positive results. I tried editing my /etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd.conf file which didnt change the situation. I also added 'local0.* /var/log/dhcpcd.log ' in my /etc/syslog which gave me zero reply .

I dont know what to do. I might as well buy a router and get rid of the second ethernetcard.
